You Can Miss Who You Used to Be (Without Wanting to Go Back)

Sometimes healing changes you so slowly that you don’t notice it at first.

You just start responding differently.

You stop chasing certain people.

You stop explaining yourself as much.

New podcast episodes, articles, and reflections on healing, growth, and becoming.

You stop fighting battles that no longer belong to you.

You stop trying to earn things you once desperately needed.

And then one day you look back and realize:

I don’t think I see the world the way I used to.

I don’t think I respond the way I used to.

I don’t think I am the same person anymore.

And that realization can feel surprisingly emotional.

We spend a lot of time talking about healing, growth, and becoming. We celebrate progress. We celebrate breakthroughs. We celebrate moving forward.

What we don’t talk about as often is the grief that can accompany those changes.

Because sometimes you miss the old version of yourself.

Not because you want to go back.

But because she was familiar.

She knew the rules.

She knew how to navigate the life you were living.

She knew how to survive.

Maybe she was the peacemaker.

The fixer.

The overexplainer.

The caretaker.

The one who always found a way to keep relationships together.

The one who worked harder when things got difficult.

The one who believed that if she could just find the right words, explain things clearly enough, love people well enough, or try a little harder, things would finally make sense.

Maybe she wasn’t healthy.

But she was familiar.

And there can be grief in letting familiar things go.

One of the most unexpected parts of healing is realizing that some of the habits, roles, and identities that once protected us are no longer needed in the same way. We begin to outgrow the very things that helped us survive.

And while that can be freeing, it can also feel like loss.

You can be grateful for who you are becoming and still feel sadness for the person who carried you through difficult seasons.

Those things can exist together.

In this week’s episode of The Reclaimed Life Podcast, I’m talking about The Grief of Becoming Someone New—the complicated emotions that can arise when healing changes us, growth changes us, and life changes us in ways we never expected.

If you’ve ever felt caught between who you used to be and who you are becoming, I think this conversation will resonate with you.
