Have you ever missed someone you know you don’t want back in your life?

That can be one of the most confusing parts of healing. Because if you miss them, you may start wondering if you made the right decision.

But missing someone doesn’t necessarily mean you want them back.

Sometimes you miss the person. Sometimes you miss the good memories. Sometimes you miss who you were when things were good.

New podcast episodes, articles, and reflections on healing, growth, and becoming.

And sometimes you’re grieving the future you thought you were going to have.

None of that means you need to return to the relationship.

You Can Miss Someone and Still Know

We sometimes treat our emotions like they’re instructions.

I miss them, so maybe I should call.

I’m lonely, so maybe I made a mistake.

I remember the good times, so maybe it wasn’t really that bad.

But feelings don’t always work that way.

You can miss someone and still know the relationship wasn’t healthy for you.

You can love someone and still know you can’t have them in your life.

You can wish things had been different without wishing to go back.

Those things can exist at the same time.

Don’t Let Loneliness Rewrite the Story

When we’re lonely, it’s easy to remember the highlights.

We remember the laughter, the familiar conversations, the holidays, the moments when we felt connected.

We don’t always remember everything that eventually brought us to the point of leaving.

That doesn’t mean the good memories weren’t real.

It means they aren’t the whole story.

You don’t have to turn every good memory into a bad one just to justify moving forward. You can appreciate what was good while still acknowledging what wasn’t.

Missing Them Doesn’t Mean You Belong With Them

Maybe that’s the distinction we need to remember most.

Missing someone and belonging with them are not the same thing.

You don’t have to contact someone simply because you miss them.

You don’t have to reopen a relationship because you’re having a lonely day.

You don’t have to question every decision you’ve made because a memory suddenly hurts.

Sometimes a feeling can simply be a feeling.

You can say, “I miss them today,” without turning it into “I need them back.”

And maybe that’s part of reclaiming your life: learning that you can feel the sadness without allowing it to pull you backward.

You can miss someone.

You can grieve what you lost.

You can remember the good.

And you can still choose to keep moving forward.

Missing someone doesn’t mean you made the wrong decision. Sometimes it simply means they mattered to you—and now you’re learning how to live with the loss.
